Pictured Rocks

We are in Munising Mi for a few days to see the sights and go to the Picture Rock Cliffs, these Mineral-stained sandstone cliffs rise up some 50 to 200 feet above Lake Superior, these awe inspiring cliffs are shaped by wind, ice and pounding waves, they are colored in shades of brown, red, tan, and green by the iron, manganese, limonite and copper in the water. As the water trickles down the sides of these cliffs the different minerals stain the cliffs these magnificent colors that are reminiscent of a painters work, a palette of natures colors, shapes and textures...they create a scene that takes your breath away! Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is a little more than 6 miles across but it follows the shores of Lake Superior for 42 miles, Lake Superior is the largest freshwater lake in the world. It is 350 miles long 160 miles across at its widest and about 1,300 feet deep. This place of beauty was authorized as the nation's first National Lakeshore in 1966, to preserve the shoreline, cliffs, beaches, dunes and forests.

We never made it by boat to the Pictured Cliffs, we got fogged out and instead
we saw some of them by land and in the search to find the cliffs we also saw six waterfalls with clear, clean fresh water cascading down rocky cliffs. We walked through some of most wonderful forests I could ever imagine, the small woodland creatures scampered around, the birds called out to each other and the smell of the forest was magical! With its deep forests, lakes, waterfalls, dunes and beaches, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is truly a wonderful place.

Lake Superior is vast and so clear, it glistens against the blue, cloud streaked sky. The bounty of this place has attracted people since the glaciers retreated north. The Archaic, Ojibway and Chippewa Indians hunted these forests and fished in Lake Superior. I can see that..still now!
