On the way to Millinocket, we stayed in Skowhegan, Maine for a couple of days and we ventured out on some adventures to see some local sights, (and maybe a moose?)
We drove to Waterville and there we ran across the Two Cents Bridge, this bridge is really the Ticonic Footbridge, it is a suspension bridge that crosses above the Kennebec River and connects the towns of Winslow and Waterville. It is one of the oldest surviving wire-cable steel suspension bridges and it is also considered to be the last known surviving toll footbridges in the United States. No one was there to take our money when we crossed, I guess they didn't want our two cents! But lots of people drop pennies, (before I realized it) I had picked up a pocketful of pennies....whoops.. I have to tell you that Maine is full of quaint small towns and I think that is where this state’s personality truly shines, they are delightful, full of beautiful old buildings, crystal clear rivers flowing over rocks, tall..tall trees, wonderful people and moose!
The next day Pierre and headed up to Moosehead Lake and thru the plethora of small towns you have to go through to get there, (we were sure we would see a moose up there!) We drove Vinn (that's the name of our Jeep) up Squaw Mountain, along some rough paths, through small ponds, over hills and through valleys....We did see some beautiful countryside...but no moose!
